CONSTANTINE EVANGELIDES

Costas Evangelides was born in Cyprus in 1938. He received a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Khartoum, Sudan (in 1965 and 1968, respectively), as well as an M.A. in 1971 and a Ph.D. in English Literature in 1977 from the University of Lancaster, U.K. He taught English Literature at the British Council in Athens and at the Faculty of English Language and Literature, School of Philosophy, University of Athens. He served as Head of the English Department (1985-1991; 1997-2001); Vice Rector of Academic Affairs and Personnel (1991-1994); Chairman of the International Relations Committee (1994-2005); and Member of the Cyprus Committee. Moreover, he was President of the Association of Greek expatriates from the Sudan, and of Lancaster University Greek Alumni Association. In 2002, he was awarded a Doctorate of Law, Honoris Causa, from Lancaster University, U.K.

Costas Evangelides published numerous books and articles in Greece and abroad on a variety of subjects such as the Literature of the Renaissance and the Romantic period, Jane Austen, Comparative Literature, non-canonical Literature, teaching Literature, ELT, and literary translation. He also wrote a number of textbooks for Greek students of English Literature. His publications include: Jane Austen: Essays (Athens: Hermes Publications, 1985)
