Bessie Dendrinos holds a position as Professor Emerita of Sociology of Language and Foreign Language Education. Interested in socially accountable applied linguistics, she follows a critical discourse analysis approach to investigate language education policies, FLT curricula, materials and pedagogic practices, as well as local and international language certification examination systems. While some of her publications in the past focused on gendered discourse and the language of bureaucracy in Greece, her main concern had been and still is  to contribute to pedagogies which will enhance a multicultural ethos of communication and plurilinguslism. Relevant to her concerns is one of her recent books, The Hegemony of English (co-authored with D. Macedo and P. Gounari), published by Paradigm Publishers in 2003, which won the 2004 AESA (American Educational Studies Association) Critics’ Choice Award. In 2005 this book appeared in Spanish, under the title Lengua, Ideología y Poder: La hegemonía del inglés (Crítica y Fundamentos 4. Barcelona: Editorial Graō), and in 2006 in Portuguese, under the title A Hegemonia da Língua Inglesa (Lisboa: Edições pedago). Researching issues of ‘interlinguistic’ literacies for European citizenry, her latest book, Politics of Linguistic Pluralism and the Teaching of Languages in Europe (co-edited with B. Mitsikopoulou), was published by Metaixmio Publishers and the University of Athens, in 2004. Since 2003 she has been deeply involved in developing a new ‘glocal’ suit of language examinations for European languages, leading to a state certificate of language proficiency and she is responsible for the English exams project and research that involves collaboration with sixty academics, testing experts and EFL professionals from Greece and abroad.
