Holding an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Haveford College, U.S.A., Robert Crist was for many years the creator and instructor of a number of courses at the Faculty of English which reflect his scientific interests: 19th-20th century American Poetry and prose, Literary Theory, Aesthetics, as well as the relation of language and Literature. His publications include Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter (1966), Man in the Midst of Immensities: The Works of Georgos Heimonas (1983), Four American Modernists: Frost, Eliot, Stevens, Williams (1984), Structures of Whitman's Leaves (1985) and Language and Being in Faulkner (1989). He has also translated several plays by Greek playwrights in English. He was elected Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of English in 2011.
