EFL SYLLABUS DESIGN AND MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

This course aims at developing students’ awareness of the curriculum development and syllabus design process as well as their skills for syllabus and materials design, development and evaluation. More specifically the objectives of this course are:

  • To develop students’ understanding of the main features and underlying principles of curriculum, syllabus and materials and the relationship between them within a language teaching programme.
  • To raise awareness of the evolution of curriculum development and language curriculum/syllabus design more specifically.
  • To raise awareness of how various features of the wider societal and educational context affect language curriculum and syllabus design and of the teachers’ role in the curriculum development/change process.
  • To develop a critical attitude towards the implementation of pre-set curricula and attempts for innovation
  • To develop students’ skills for the design and evaluation of syllabi and materials appropriate to their teaching context and learners’ needs.

By the end of this course the students are expected to be able to

  • Identify the underlying principles, describe and analyse curricula, syllabi and EFL materials
  • Develop criteria for the evaluation of syllabi and materials
  • Design/adapt/revise syllabi and materials appropriate to their teaching context and their learners’ needs
