THE CREATIVE WRITING CELEBRATION
Creative Writing was first taught at the Greek University by the Faculty of English Language and Literature at the University of Athens. Introduced as an elective course in the spring of 1996, each annual seminar culminated in the publication of the best poems, short stories and plays of the students in the journal a-formes, edited by Professor Liana Sakelliou-Schultz.
To celebrate the 10 years’ anniversary of the seminar, the professors of the seminar poet Liana Sakelliou-Schultz (poetry, fiction) and playwright Eleni Haviara-Kehaidou (drama) organized a celebration at The Old University in Plaka on the 12th of October 2006, attended by more than 300 people and announced through a film presentation on the national television. It was unique because of the collaboration of the Faculty of English Language and Literature with the Music and Theatre Departments. The 52 best pieces of writing from all nine issues were read, recited, and performed by the students who wrote them as well as by actors and actresses, some from the Theatre Department and others from the professional theatre. Further enhancing the evening was the twelve-member choir called «εν φωναίς».
The celebration with poetry, theatre, and music was brought to its climax with an awards ceremony. Twenty graduates from the seminars were awarded with specialty books donated by publishers and The National Book Center, and the highest award, as determined by five judges, was given by the British Council for the winner to attend a seminar on the teaching of the English language. During the reception the best writing from the ten years of aformes was presented in the honorary anthology morfes A’ .
